Yet still the condition in extconf is being used to define options for
the build process, right?

As long that is true, the evaluation of the platform is still relevant

Cannot comment further right now, did a good progress on this front
and also support for it with rake-compiler cross-compiling, but still
too premature to start testing 3rd party dependencies (still dealing
with Ruby bundled ones).

Will keep everybody posted.
