rake-compiler 0.7.5 can compile Ruby 1.8.6 official release packages
and 1.8.7 only form a checkout. 1.9.2 works out of the box.

Please email me personally with the output you're getting and will
love help you out (Windows, Ubuntu 10.04 and OSX SL over here).
