I have tried to build on a 64 bit Fedora machine running ruby 1.8.7 (2010-12-23 patchlevel 330) [x86_64-linux] and it hangs in the tests at "async callback". Any idea how to debug this?

My recommendation could be biased... but RubyInstaller 1.8.7-p330 and
RubyInstaller 1.9.2-p136 should work ;-)

If all this goes to the Win2008 machine I discussed with Nick, then I
can put all the needed stuff there for you and email you when is done.
