Since I have two HD's (Macintosh HD and Macintosh SSD), my full pwd is "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/etcetera/etcetera" and if I rename the folder Macintosh HD (I have tried this) the OS instantly shuts down (doesn't know where it's files are!) and EVERYTHING is lost. So while the error message may be clear, the solution is not.
Boot with OSX install disk, access disk utility, rename partition, that worked for me.
