I recently cloned the XNI repo but haven't done much more than spelunking why the download took a bit

  PS xni-git> du .\jruby-ext -B mb
  .\jruby-ext: 19.17 MiB

and discovering that XNI leverages FFI.

When you get a free moment, please provide a quick summary of:

  * XNI's main reason(s) for being
  * when should one prefer XNI over FFI?
  * will XNI always utilize FFI?
